Ghost Writing Workshop
This workshop is intended for people who have an interest in ghost writing as a way of adding a new revenue stream to their income as writers, earning a living from ghost writing or for those who might be thinking about hiring a ghost writer. The workshop lasts fifty minutes and so there is no suggestion that those attending will emerge as fully-fledged ghost writers – this is an introduction to the field and there will be opportunities to do some work, both in the workshop and later, around the subject.
What do we mean by ghost writing?
In these days of digital marketing, the expression “ghost writing” has come to be used to describe anything – a blog post, an online article, a review – that will be published either with no name on it or with the name of someone who didn’t write it. That is not the kind of ghost writing this workshop is about. We will be discussing the writing by one writer of a full-length book to be published under someone else’s name. “The writer” in this work is the person who actually writes the book; “the author” is the person who takes credit for it (and who may or may not actually exist). John Lynch, who will be running the workshop, made a YouTube video describing how ghost-writing works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERQk-gGylJo.
Who is running the workshop and what does he know about the subject?
John Lynch had his breakthrough year as a writer in 1989 when he sold his first book to a publisher, his first short story to BBC Radio 4 and his first article to a magazine. (If you like, you can listen to that short story here: https://tinyurl.com/zhukbhz). Since then, he has ghostwritten more than sixty full-length books in both fiction and non-fiction as well as publishing contemporary fiction, historical fiction and non-fiction in his own name.
What will the workshop cover?
How big is the ghostwriting market?
How easy is it to get into?
Why would you want to be a ghost writer instead of writing under your own name?
What do you need to succeed?
What are the pitfalls?
How much can you earn?
There will also be a number of exercises; as fifty minutes is not enough time to complete them, and as not everyone will want to complete them in any case, they can be completed later at home and sent to John Lynch for comments.
